The Weber State University Alumni Association hosted the eleventh annual Golf Classic and silent auction to raise money for scholarships Friday.

“It’s a little bit unique from any other golf tournaments that go on campus,” said Melissa Collins, the WSUAA event manager. “Most of them go to specific departments, but ours does scholarships for every student. Anybody could apply for it.”

The students who receive the money from the tournament had  relatives who also attended WSU. When a student fills out the financial aid and scholarship applications, the applications that fulfill the alumni portion filled out are sent to the WSUAA office.

A scholarship committee from the Board of Directors helps choose which students receive the money raised during the tournament. Each year, the committee creates a criterion to help determine which students should be chosen.

“Normally it includes community involvement, involvement on the Weber State campus, showing leadership qualities,” said Teresa Dozier, chair of the Student Relations Committee.

This year, the committee also decided to look at the intent the student has to stay connected to WSU after graduation.

Dozier also helped people with the silent auction during the tournament. The auction included trips to Disneyland and other places in California.

The money raised from this year’s golf tournament will go toward the 2013-14 school year. About $20,000 was raised at the golf tournament last year, and the money was recently given out to students.

The money was raised during the tournament in a number of different ways. Each player paid $125 or $450 for a group to play. People also donated by sponsoring golfers. Companies could pay a fee to have their company logo on a golf cart or a sign during the tournament.

TAB Bank was one of the companies to pay for a driver sponsorship. The driver sponsor included having the name displayed during the meals and received special recognition during the awards ceremony. This sponsorship cost $2,500, and TAB received its four-player golf game for free.

“We are right across the street from Weber State . . . and it’s a good fit to become more involved in the community and to sponsor events like this and to be a good neighbor,” said Trevor Morris, marketing manager at TAB Bank. Morris is also a WSU alumnus, and the bank currently has employees who attend WSU.

When starting to prepare for the tournament, the WSUAA asks community members for donations. Members asks businesses to donate money, auction prizes, raffle prizes and items to put in the participants’ player bags.

“We try as much as we can to make this a zero budget so that everything that we make can go towards scholarships,” Collins said.

The Barn Golf Course, where the game was played, hosted the tournament for free.

The WSUAA also accepts money for student scholarships throughout the year. People can donate money and, for donations greater than $500, the donor’s name will be carved into a brick, either inside or at the entrance of the Lindquist Alumni Center.

“We hope to continue this,” said Margie Esquibel, associate director of Alumni Relations. “It’s wonderful to provide scholarships for students.”
