It was a one-win weekend for the Weber State University hockey team at the annual Wasatch Cup.
After the Wildcats dropped their first game on Friday night against Utah State, they rebounded with a win over BYU, giving them a third-place finish in the Wasatch Cup.
The game against Utah State came down to the wire as the Aggies won 4-2 after an empty net goal in the final minute extended their lead to two goals.
In the first game, the Wildcats played one of their strongest games mentally of the season with only two trips to the penalty box total. On the other side, Utah State sent five players to the penalty box six times, each with two-minute penalties.
The goals for Weber State were scored by Lakoda Coleman and Troy Quarnberg in the first period. Goalie Weston Maughan allowed only three goals while converting 27 saves.
On Saturday, Weber State came prepared to face the BYU Cougars. After a scoreless first period, the Wildcats scored three goals in the second period and three more in the third.
Alex Pizarro scored two of the Wildcats’ goals in the win over BYU, with Bohin and Coleman adding goals for the second consecutive game.
“BYU was a little bit of a weaker team at the beginning of the year, but they really improved, so it was really good to get that win,” Cosman said.
Of the three goals scored on goalie Lucas Thatcher two were during BYU advantages of 5-on-4 while a Weber State player was in the penalty box, after the puck spent a majority of the first period on the BYU side of the ice.
“You’re trying to do a little bit of anything to try and keep yourself warm and to stay focused in the game,” Thatcher said.
This game was less restrained for both teams as BYU had player advantages seven times in the game while Weber State had five advantages, including a 5-on-3 power play for 34 seconds during the second period.
The next games for the hockey team are February 4-6, when they will travel to Utah State for a regional tournament.
“Being able to bounce back and get a win, it’s great for the boys and great to get us back on track for next weekend,” Cosman said.
The next home game will be Feb. 13 against Utah State.
