Local poets present at Only in Ogden

Clapping, snapping and stomping were just some of the ways the crowd applauded the talent on stage for the Only In Ogden poetry slam.

While poets give voice to their writing, audience members react whenever their words are particularly moving. Poetry slams are a means of openly expressing oneself, as well as a fun opportunity to learn and grow with other poets in the community. Slams around the Ogden area have become more familiar, and poets of all ages from different locations are establishing themselves in this popular form of entertainment.

Angelika Brewer, a young poetry enthusiast, said her fascination with words peaked during her high school years through the inspiration of an English teacher. Now she seeks out venues and encourages others to join her in sharing their work.

Last Friday evening, Brewer hosted the poetry slam at Only In Ogden. The event brought together many poets, along with their personal stories. Members of the audience volunteered to rate the readings. Though many of these readings touched on emotional topics, the poetry slam was a warm, inclusive environment.

For those interested in poetry writing or listening, Grounds For Coffee on Harrison Boulevard holds an open mic night on the first and third Friday of each month from 8 to 10 p.m.
