Losing sucks. There is no nicer way to say it. Whether it be in a football game, in your own backyard or a state championship soccer match, losers rarely have a smile on their faces as they leave the field of play. As fans of Weber State football, losing has become too familiar to us.

People have a hard time supporting teams that lose and continue to lose. Message boards and Twitter quickly get filled with bounties on the heads of coaches. Social media has opened Pandora’s box for fans who need to vent their frustration. The fans of those teams usually get off the bandwagon faster than they got on it.

As fans we take winning for granted. As long as the team wins, we have no problem forgiving mistakes or shortcomings. But once the losses start to pile up, the nitpicking gets more and more intense.

But there are success stories of college programs that have been been resurrected and are now flourishing. Jim Harbaugh turned Stanford into a force in the PAC-12 after many years of being the beating stick. Art Briles aligned the stars for a program that was more known for getting steamrolled by other Texas programs for decades.

I am very confident that Jay Hill is doing the same thing to the Weber State program. Since John L. Smith ended his short tenure as the head coach and the Jody Sears experiment, wins for the Wildcats have been few and far between, especially against any other team not named Idaho State.

From what I have observed, the Wildcats have bought into what Hill has been preaching. They know that there are held to a higher standard and are expected to bring their best every day. Because if they don’t, the coaches will be sure to find other players or will bring in players who will bring home wins.

As a student body, we have a great opportunity to support the football team as they have two straight home games for the first time all season. I know they still haven’t won a game but it wasn’t from a lack of effort. Hill has this team playing better and the wins will come. Whether it be in the next few games or over the next few seasons, Weber State football will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future, and they are going to need our support during the good and bad moments.
