Power goes out on campus for hour

A power outage interrupted classes and students working on their class assignments at Weber State University about 2:15 p.m. today.

Diana R., a WSU student, said she was ringing up her food order in the Shepherd Union Building when she heard a buzzing sound and the lights began to flicker, and then the power went out.

The power outage knocked out the lights and computer labs in all the buildings on campus except the Kimball Visual Arts Building.

Lindsey Gray, a customer service representative at WSU Facilities Management, said technicians saw smoke coming from a transformer at the substation located on the hill by Skyline Drive. The cause of the smoke is unknown, but technicians repaired the problem and restored power to campus after about a hour.

Austin Hatch, a WSU senior who works at KWCR, said he heard a pop and then the power went out. Water leaked into the radio station, damaging the carpet.
