WSU observes National Day of Service and Remembrance Today has been declared Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance by President Barack Obama.

In a statement released by the White House, the president called upon all departments, agencies and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff.

“Today, we can honor those we lost by building a nation worthy of their memories,” Obama stated in the press release. “Let us also live up to the selfless example of the heroes who gave of themselves in the face of such great evil. As we mark the anniversary of Sept. 11, I invite all Americans to observe a National Day of Service and Remembrance by uniting in the same extraordinary way we came together after the attacks.”

As of Dec. 18, 2001, Congress has designated Sept. 11 as Patriot Day. Congress approved a law on April 21, 2009, that annually recognized the day as the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Obama also called upon citizens of the United States to participate in community service projects, to observe the day with the appropriate ceremonies and activities, and to observe a moment of silence.

The Center for Diversity and Unity, along with the Weber State University Student Association, will host a Remembrance Day event today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Shepherd Union Atrium.
