For the singles, Valentine's Day is a good excuse to make dinner with friends. (Source: Tribune News Service)

In the words of the brilliant Oscar Wilde, “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.”

Valentine’s Day is stereotypically filled with couples, love and affection. Although the day is traditionally about couples, single people can still enjoy the holiday.

Valentine’s Day provides the perfect opportunity to find something cute and interesting to do on your own or with friends. For example, friends can spend the day together, watching favorite movies and making a homemade meal. Dressing up and going out to a nice restaurant is another fun way to spend Valentine’s Day without a significant other, especially with a group of friends.

If you prefer to spend the day enjoying the outdoors, consider spending some time in the cool outdoors hiking the Waterfall Canyon trail in Ogden and packing a picnic to bring along. Crystal Hot Springs in Honeyville can also add a fresh backdrop to your Valentine’s Day.

If the weather is not conducive to outdoor activities, Weber Ice Sheet’s open skate hours are from 12–2 and 7–9 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. The price for adults is $6.50, but WSU students can skate for $5, including the skate rental.

If you have the extra time to burn, try planning a long weekend trip with your friends to a nearby destination, like Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Shoshone Falls, Idaho, or Garden of the Gods, Colorado.

Why not spend the day painting and eating chocolates? Color Me Mine on Historic 25th Street provides ceramics and paint supplies for customers to decorate their own crafts. Pricing starts at $10 per adult, and a discount package is available for 10 percent off on Valentine’s Day. The Queen Bee, also on 25th street, is holding a chocolate tasting on Valentine’s Day starting at 6 p.m. Tickets for the tasting are $10, and attendees get to try six different chocolates and receive a discount card for the store afterward.

The holiday is meant to symbolize love and happiness. Capture the moment by hiring a photographer and holding a photoshoot for yourself, or include your friends in it, too! Buy yourself flowers, chocolates, dress up and spend the day doing your favorite activities no matter what those may be. Treat yourself!

No matter how you choose to spend the day, Valentine’s Day doesn’t necessarily have to involve two people.
